    I just wonder why a telescope of all things would need an aiming scope.

    It's a spotting scope. You look through that to find what you really want to look at.

    In high magnification telescopes (or any telescope) it's a pain in the ass to find deep sky objects or specific stars unless you have a lower magnification scope to help you find things.
